2024-04-11 by drive360

Rimac's engineering arm, Rimac Technology, has unveiled a groundbreaking collaboration with BMW Group, marking a significant milestone in the realm of electric vehicles (EVs). This partnership will see Rimac's advanced batteries powering BMW's upcoming Neue Klasse range of EVs, slated to hit production lines next year.

The venture entails the establishment of cutting-edge automated production lines dedicated to battery manufacturing at Rimac's Croatian headquarters, a move signaling a major investment in EV technology. While specific details regarding the scale and financial aspects of the collaboration remain undisclosed, it's evident that both entities are committed to driving forward the electrification agenda.

BMW's strategy for EV battery procurement extends globally, with existing and upcoming facilities in China, Hungary, Mexico, and the US. Moreover, a dedicated assembly plant in Germany will cater to BMW's EV lineup, including the anticipated Neue Klasse range, set to debut in 2025.

In parallel with these developments, BMW is making significant strides in the Indian EV market, recently opening bookings for the all-electric i5 sedan. As the fifth all-electric offering from BMW in India, the i5 boasts formidable performance figures, with dual electric motors delivering 601hp and 820Nm of torque, propelling the sedan from 0-100kph in just 3.8 seconds.

With its arrival, the i5 is set to carve a niche in the Indian EV landscape, positioned between the i4 and i7 models. As anticipation mounts, industry watchers eagerly await pricing details, with expectations of the i5 commanding a premium price tag, potentially crossing the Rs 1 crore mark (ex-showroom).

In summary, Rimac and BMW's collaboration underscores the dynamic evolution of EV technology, heralding a new era of electrified mobility. As BMW strengthens its global footprint in EV production, the Indian market stands poised to embrace cutting-edge electric offerings, paving the way for a sustainable automotive future.
